Visitor engagement is the most important yet most underrated SEO factor. In other words, Bounce rate or Dwell time on your website heavily affects your website rankings.
What Is Dwell Time?
Dwell time is a term used by Google to measure your website visitors engagement with your content. The more your audience interacts with your blog, for example, click another page, spend plenty of time or take any other action the lower the bounce rate and higher your content will rank.
Very often you will notice that you will publish an awesome piece of content which will sit at first page of search engines but will slowly drop in rankings and will eventually end up at 5th page of Google. This happens because of high bounce rate and less visitor engagement.
Working for various clients, I had experienced amazing results by increasing Dwell time rate on their website by implementing these simple but effective strategies to ensure visitors do take some sort of action on your website.
1- Use Read More / Show More Button On Your Website.
It is really important to get user to take action in first three to five seconds of him landing on your website. And there is no better way to put a show more, read more or continue reading button on your website. Hide rest of your article behind a button so that user does take action to read rest of it thus decreasing your bounce rate. Leading blogs like Huffington post had successfully implemented this strategy to increase engagement.
2- Make Your Content Super Interesting By Using Visuals So That Visitors Are Glued To Your Website And Want To Consume More Of It.
In this day and age of BuzzFeed and Shareworthy average content does not cut it anymore. Your content should be super interesting and or useful so that your reader wants all of it. Websites like BuzzFeed had perfected the art of creating super awesome visual content to ensure people are glued to their website.
You can also take inspiration from BuzzFeed and Viral Nova and make sure to add catchy images to your website.
3- Use Super Catchy Content Above The Headline.
Imagine if visitors land on your website by mistake. They read the headline and think they are not interested in your content.
Why not give them an alternative, super interesting content above headline to make them click? Try it, it works.
4: Use free Social Locker to lock your content.
By using this free plugin you can lock your premium content behind the social locker and only give access if your visitor’s tweet, share or +1 your content.
We all work very hard to produce top quality free content for our readers so why not request them to pay it with a tweet or share?
You can find this awesome plugin here.
5: Use an email capture Popup.
This SumoMe popup will perform two functions for you at one go.
When a visitors lands on your website this intelligent Pop up waits for the right time and then shows up to your visitors. Visitors will either leave their email with you (if they love your content) or they will click on small cross button on right hand corner of Popup resulting in action being taken on your website.
The best thing about this nifty little clever Pop up is, it is mobile friendly for added benefit.
You can get it for free here.
6: Place an Advert below headline or in middle of your content.
Can you see those read areas on the page image above?
Yes that’s where websites get most of their clicks. If you use your website to earn money via adsense or any other publisher program place your ads in red areas highlighted to increase your revenue and decrease your bounce rate.
Apester is a small user engagement tool. This tool creates a poll in middle of your content. People who read your content will love to give their opinion. And what is the better way to engage somone by asking for their opinion or guess and showing them result of how many people agree with them.
Let’s say for example you wrote an article on US politics.
At the end of the article, you can create a small poll using apester asking your readers, who in their opinion will win next US elections. As soon as the user clicks their preffered answer not only that you have achieved your task of making people take action on your webiste, your readers can also see what percentage of other readers agree with them.
